What makes air conditioning work:
Remember: Any sufficiently advanced technology is
indistinguishable from magic. I forget who said it.
The short story:
- Compress a gas
- the gas becomes denser and hotter
- Remove some of the heat
- the beauty of the gasses used as refrigerants is that they
will then condense into a liquid
- Spray the liquid through a small orifice to decrease the
pressure
- another beauty of refrigerants: Lowering the pressure
turns them back into a gas
- The ultimate beauty: When a liquid turns into a
gas, heat is released and the gas becomes cold
- Flow the cold gas through a "radiator" (just a
length of pipe with radiating fins attached)
- Pull air over the cold fins to make the air cold
- Blow the cooled air into the car
Now what could be simpler than that?
