Note the rubber joint between the inner and outer parts of the pulley (the dark ring). Any sort of reference mark or marks that cross the joint will do. If the joint ever slips, the reference marks will be obviously misaligned and you'll know it's time to replace the pulley pronto. Thanks to Ari for this neat tidbit.
